Review: My Brain is Different Stories of ADHD and Other Developmental Disorders by MONZUSU

TRIGGER WARNING: SUICIDE, ABUSE

Having just finished reading My Brain is Different Stories of ADHD and Other Developmental Disorders I am left totally in awe. This manga, its creator, and the eight individuals who allowed their personal stories to be shared with the world are incredibly brave. I was blown away by the raw honesty in each of the stories within this volume. The trigger warning is there for those who need it, but given the content of this manga I find it an understandable component in proper context. I also give major props to Seven Seas for having the foresight to not only include their own warning in the introductory pages of the volume but to word it with respect, sensitivity, and awareness of the delicate nature of these stories.

This collection features the true stories of 9 separate adults with developmental disorders and their experiences navigating the highs and lows of life. These stories spare no detail and offer a truly illuminating glimpse into the lives of those whose stories are part of the collection. So much of it is surprising, disappointing, and heart breaking in turns. What each person has been through and their willingness to show even the ugliest of circumstances is nothing short of astounding. The utter bravery it takes to put yourself out there like this is something that absolutely deserves praise. Author/Illustrator MONZUSU has done society as a whole a great service in creating this work. I can only imagine what a comfort this manga will be to so many people. For some it may be like a glimpse in the mirror, while for others it may be the "aha" moment that begins a journey of self discovery. It really has true potential to affect people's lives. What higher praise is there than that?

I personally loved the art. It was the right style to take a heavy subject and make it more approachable. I really just have nothing but praise for this manga. I don't think there's a single person out there who wouldn't benefit from reading this. Whether you think it applies to you or not, whether you know someone with a developmental disorder or not, whether you think this is your type of thing or not. It never hurts to walk a mile in someone else's shoes.

TLDR;

Read this one EVERYWHERE and pass it off to the person next to you. This one is.. just awesome.
