Review: Yagi the Bookshop Goat by Fumi Furukawa

April 13, 2022

Our friends over at Tokyopop were kind enough to hook us up with an advance review copy of Yagi the Bookshop Goat so we can get you clued in before it drops next Tuesday, 4/26, so let's dive in!

Yagi the Bookshop Goat is seriously THE cutest BL I have read in a hot minute. Those of you who love sweet stories that keep you grinning as you turn the pages with absolutely eat this one up! The story centers around our titular character Yagi, a goat from the herbivore zone who works at a bookstore run by Ookami, the wolf. Yagi's lifelong dream has been to work in a bookstore, but due to his species' propensity for eating paper, that simple dream has been surprisingly hard to fulfill. After striking out at every shop in the herbivore zone, Yagi turns to the carnivore zone in hopes that somebody will roll the dice on having a goat as an employee. Luckily for Yagi, Ookami, the prickly manager of a bookshop in the carnivore zone, is willing to take just such a risk.

Yagi and Ookami's story is a feel-good tale of two opposites developing and discovering their feelings for each other - left behind are all the common manga tropes that tend to complicate relationships. No trouble making third wheels, no huge misunderstandings or deeply hurt feelings, etc. Just pure, adorable character development page after page. In fact, this story was SO cute that I forgot it had an 18+ rating! As for those adult scenes, they weren't overly utilized and they fit into the story line rather than being what carries the story line; as such they were somewhat brief, but decently spicy.

I think the cover gives a good idea just how darn cute the artwork is. Yagi is ADORABLE both in appearance and personality. I really just couldn't stop smiling the entire time I was reading and I def want a print copy for my personal shelf at this point.

If you love a sweet, uncomplicated romance with a charming backstory and a little bit of heat for good measure, this is one you're sure to enjoy.

TLDR;

A lot of this is SFW but pay attention to those context clues so you know when to look around before turning the page. This one is both SWEET and SPICY!
